Poland on the World Veterinary Map, a New Anti-Itch Drug, and Transport Relief for Breeders
This week's industry news ties together three seemingly distant threads – international veterinary diplomacy, fresh research into a skin allergy drug, and changes to EU transport law. All of them point to the same conclusion: equine care is professionalizing on every front, from the clinic to the transport truck. Here's a look at what this means for breeders, veterinarians, and stable-related businesses.
01 · Veterinary Congresses
Gdańsk to Host World Equine Veterinary Congress [1]
The latest issue of "Weterynaria w Terenie" (3/2026) brings news that should delight the entire equestrian community in Poland: in May 2028, Gdańsk will host the congress of the World Equine Veterinary Association (WEVA). Even earlier, in March 2027, organizers will hold a preparatory meeting. This is a tremendous honor – WEVA is one of the most important organizations in the world bringing together equine veterinarians, and hosting its congress marks a genuine boost to the international standing of the Polish industry.
The issue itself doesn't stop at this one piece of news, either. It also includes material on chronic lymphedema in horses and recommendations on physical activity for pregnant mares – topics that will come in handy for anyone involved in horse breeding and care on a daily basis.
Speaking of news from veterinary clinics, let's move straight on to another equally interesting development – this time from the world of pharmacology.
02 · Pharmacology & Research
A Canine Drug as a New Weapon Against Equine Skin Allergies [2]
In 2026, the journal "Veterinary Dermatology" published the results of a pilot study that could change the approach to treating allergic dermatitis in horses. The drug tested was oclacitinib – a substance used for years mainly in dogs with skin problems. In 16 horses suffering from allergic dermatitis, oral administration of the drug over 21 days brought a clear reduction in itching and an improvement in skin lesions.
This is one of the first scientific studies to test this drug in equine medicine at all, so broader conclusions and approval for new indications will still take some time. Still, the direction itself is intriguing – it shows that drugs already well established in small-animal veterinary medicine can find a second life in treating horses, opening up new therapeutic possibilities where existing options have often been limited.
From equine skin health, we now move on to a topic that concerns literally everyone who transports horses across EU borders.
03 · Law & Transport
An End to Unnecessary Red Tape in Thoroughbred Transport? [3]
The European Federation of Thoroughbred Breeders' Associations (EFTBA) has announced a significant change to the draft EU regulation on animal welfare during transport. After years of intensive lobbying, a provision was introduced under which studbook-registered breeding horses are to be exempted from mandatory rest stops, journey logs, and rigid transport time limits. The decisive argument was the already very high standards under which these animals are transported.
For transport companies and breeders, this is potentially a significant organizational relief – less paperwork while maintaining a high level of animal care during travel. It's also a good example that animal welfare and regulatory simplification don't have to be mutually exclusive, as long as industry standards are already sufficiently high.
